The article from The Business Standard highlights the challenges and progress of the Semiconductor Technology Research Centre (STRC) at Dhaka University, established in 1985. Despite its long history, the centre has struggled to advance beyond basic research into semiconductor device manufacturing. Dr. Mujib Lennin Palash, the current director of STRC and associate professor at the EEE department, provides key insights into the centre's operations. He emphasizes that while the centre focuses on providing hands-on training to students in material processing, synthesis, and characterization, it lacks the facilities for comprehensive semiconductor device research and manufacturing. Dr. Palash notes that with adequate funding of Tk20-50 crore, it would be possible to start making semiconductor devices. He also highlights the centre's success in training students, many of whom go on to work for international companies like Intel and GlobalFoundries, and expresses hope for developing industry-academia relationships to overcome funding challenges and advance semiconductor research in Bangladesh.
